Cool [problem] Bluescreen 0x00000019 (BAD_POOL_HEADER) on XP Pro XP2

    Hello friends,

I'm getting this problem quite frequently now:

    Bluescreen 0x00000019 (BAD_POOL_HEADER)

    Actions already taken:
    1. did windows repair
    2. replaced everything except laptop battery & HDD
    3. did a hard disk check & it came clean, no errors.
    4. pagefile was also removed & put back new

    Description:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0x861b8af0, 0x861b8bb8, 0x0a190001). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP

No special activity would be going on when this happens. only thing going on was outlook, communicator.

    Appreciate help.

    Thanks,
    Grr

    BAD_POOL_HEADER

This is, perhaps, the most obscure error message. In most cases, if you receive this error, it's related to the most recent change you've made on your system. Try undoing the change to get rid of the error.

well it crashed/BSOD just after doing a windows repair. So i'm ruling out the chance that those 2/3 caused any problem. Moreover when it crashes none of them would be running.

I have faced that problem few months ago when my hdd was causing problem. It may sounds strange but worked for me , open all your connecting ports such as hdd - mobo connector, dvd drive connector, Power connectors from front panel & Ram. Clean and reassemble them.
I don't need to know everything, I just need to know where to find it, when I need it.

Run bluescreenview from nirsoft. Might give you a clue.

Do you have any cloning prog sucha s acronis, carbonite? did you made a reinstal from thos?

    1. Go to windows Device Manager
    2. Click "view" and select "show hidden devices"
    3. Scroll down to "storage volumes"
    4. Click on the plus to expand.
    5. Click on each one listed and right click and uninstall. (you will get a message on some saying to reboot before it takes effect. Select no until you do them all.)
    6. Reboot.
    7. Wait till windows automatically reinstalls devices. Will prompt to reboot again.
    8 Reboot.

    1. Hardware side: Certain corrupted hardware can make the system unstable, some serious hardware issue can even make the system unbootable or cause Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) issue.

    2. Software side: If there are system file missing or corrupted, we can try to repair the system. But sometimes, it is hard to tell if the issue was caused by software or hardware, we may need to use Parallel Install as a final test. Since the Parallel Install would build a clean Windows XP without data loss issue and the influence from the original installation, we can make sure this is a hardware if we do not have this issue in the new Parallel Installed system.

Since you have replaced the Hard Drive yet, we can use Parallel Install to test if this issue may related to Operating System (OS) side. Please notice that this is a test step and we would not have data loss issue if we following those steps correctly.

To perform a parallel installation of Windows XP, you just need to select another folder or drive letter (for example D when performing the installation. This will install a clean system and we can recover all personal data after performing a Parallel Install.

Note: all third party programs, Microsoft Office programs, Windows XP Service Packs and Windows Updates may need to be reinstalled in this new system.

Detailed steps of a Parallel Install
    =======================
    1. Change the BIOS setting to make the computer boot from the CDROM drive. (If you don't know how to change this BIOS setting, please contact the computer manufacturer for more information.)

    2. Insert the Windows XP Setup CD and reboot the computer from the CD.

    3. If you are prompted to press a key to boot from the CD, please press Enter or spacebar.

    4. Then you will see the Windows Setup blue screen. After a while, you will see the following information on your screen:

. To set up Windows XP now, press Enter.
. To Repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
. To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Please press Enter at this point.

    5. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

    6. Select the partition in which you want to install Windows XP, and then press Enter.

    7. Choose the "Leave the current file system intact (no changes)" option, and then press Enter to continue.

    8. Press ESC to install to a different folder.

    9. If Setup detects another Operating System folder, Setup prompts you to type the name for the new folder after the back slash (\), for example, "\WINXP" (without the quotation marks). If there are no other Operating Systems detected, Setup automatically names the folder "\Windows" (without the quotation marks).

    10. Press Enter to continue.

    11. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Windows XP Setup.

Please refer to the "Installing to a New Folder" section in the article "How to install Windows XP"
(Note: Please do not use the steps in the "Installing to a New Hard Disk" section, which will delete all data on the partition.)

I started having the same thing a few months ago (XP-SP3) and have no idea why.
It might happen twice in a couple of days and then go away for a week or two.

One thing that I have found keeps it away is making sure that the disk and registry are well cleaned and defragged.

Around the time this started there was a large download from MS Update which caused a few problems and I wonder if this is something left over from that?

As it has only been intermittent and is becoming less frequent I have not bothered to do anything about it as it does not appear to affect the general performance of my PC.

I would be interested to know if others are having this as well.

@Pilgrim-online - I have same symptoms. It is not frequent. And for me there were no MS updates.

    @ha14-

Thanks Buddy. No I do not have any cloning prog sucha s acronis, carbonite not did i do any reinstals.

I checked & found 3 Storage Volumes. Any specific need to uninstall them?

    1. Hardware side: everything was changed except HDD & Battery
    2. Software side: OS was repaired fully. i would not be able to go for parallel installation as this is an office laptop.
